Just wanted to note some of the books I’ve been reading during this part of the course.

Family Frames, Marianne Hirsch

really interesting theory, liked her explanation of the Barthes’s ‘Winter Garden’ in the Introduction. although I did understand the meaning from the project in Context and Narrative I thought her description explained it really well.

People of the Twenty-First Century – Hans Eijkelboom

This book is just pages of people, taken covertly in different places and different times, I like the addition of the place, date and time the images were taken. Found myself looking up dates that are special to me to see if there was a collection for that day!. Some were a bit obvious, i.e. if you stand outside a department store you’re going to capture lots of people with the same shopping bag! But other themes like people all wearing jumpers with diamonds on was not.

Made me notice that loads of kids had scooters when we went to prom. If I wasn’t nervous about taking images of kids I could have filled a page.

Context and Narrative in Photography

by Short, Leet and Kalpaxi, this is one of the recommended reading books. Case Study on ‘Towards the Promised Land’ by Wendy Ewald was very interesting. Used this as an example for Exercise 3
